This is a watercolor study of an interesting tree I saw during a winter visit to the Civil War battlefield at Shiloh, in Tennessee. The tree hovers over an area known as "The Hornet's Nest" so named because of the ferocious fighting that occurred there in 1862. I took the liberty of sketching in a real hornet's nest at the base of the tree.
